Mindfulness and Our Well-being

Mindfulness simply put is living in the here and now. It involves being present to one’s current physical environment, senses, and thoughts; without wanting to change anything, rather observing them equanimous (in a non-judgmental way). Mindfulness can be trained through meditation.

Meditation is an approach or technique that one can adopt to achieve a state of calmness and stability through deep concentration.

Some of the benefits of meditation include:

1. Improved focus

2. Compassion

3. A sense of calm

4. Being able to control emotions

5. Increases the ability to see things for what they are

6. Better sleep quality

7. Helps with anxiety and depression

8. Reduces stress

9. Can help with addiction

These are some of the resources we use to stay equanimous:

Humans are incredible beings that learn about themselves through various ways. The 3 most important ways are:

1. Rationalising – The experiences we go through help us develop our problem-solving skills. This then helps us get overcome the challenges we face. Even if we have not experienced something firsthand, we have the ability to use our past experiences and rationalisation skills to learn new things and work things out.

2. Believing – Learning through other people. Much of what we know may have come from teachers, parents, books written by experts, etc.

3. Experience – This is one of the most important way of learning. One’s personal experience of something is the best evidence they have and has a bigger impact to one’s growth and development.

Understanding our experiences is pivotal. A personal experience of being bitten by a snake teaches shows you that it hurts. This experience could lead to a life-long fear of snakes, unless someone explains to you that not all snakes bite, and not all snakes are dangerous.

Hence why it is important to combine the three ways of learning mentioned above. Therefore, by believing an expert who tells you not all snakes bite, and using our reasonable mind, we will start making sense of our experiences and not avoid situations that make us feel uncomfortable.
